Monetary systems are increasingly being digitized. For the Eurosystem, for example, there are efforts to digitize the common currency. On the one hand, the European Central Bank is discussing the introduction of its own digital currency, a so-called digital central bank currency, Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). On the other hand, private initiatives are also planning to do so, which means they are in a race with the public sector to introduce a digital, programmable currency for the first time. However, the evolution of digital money systems is exceedingly dynamic, as demonstrated by Meta's (formerly Facebook) discontinuation of its own cryptocurrency Diem (formerly Libra) in January 2022. Nevertheless, the race to introduce a digital euro continues and the FERI Cognitive Finance Institute will continue to monitor the topic.
