A planetary wake-up call of great urgency: On August 1, 2024, the global Earth Overshoot Day was reached! On this day, humanity will have used up all the resources that our planet can regenerate in a year. This day, calculated by the Global Footprint Network, highlights a serious ecological crisis: Currently, humanity would need 1.7 Earths to sustainably meet its needs!
What is particularly alarming is the fact that this day has been steadily - and with increasing acceleration - moving forward since 1970. For Germany, Earth Overshoot Day was already on May 2, 2024, which underlines the urgency of the issue.
Considerable efforts are required to counteract this overuse of planetary resources. Only decisive action can respect the ecological limits of our planet and secure a sustainable future for generations to come. This requires political measures, innovative technologies and a clear focus on the protection of biodiversity as well as the rapid development of alternative food systems.
