Wheat is one of the most important staple foods, along with corn and rice. Until now, Ukraine and Russia together provided more than a quarter of the world's wheat exports. Ukraine alone exported more than 18 million tons of wheat per year, accounting for three-quarters of total production abroad, mainly to the Middle East.
Exports of corn, barley, rapeseed and sunflower oil are similarly significant. The war is destroying this valuable "granary of the world" - with fatal consequences for the global food market. With Ukraine failing as a major supplier of food to poorer countries, millions of people face famine if the war continues, according to the World Food Programme.
